Imagination Is The Greatest Tool But Are We Using It Correctly?
We, humans are blessed. And you know what makes us so blessed? It’s our mind which does. We have everything else in common, it’s just the mind and it’s abilities to think beyond, which differentiates us from the four legged ones. Unlike the animals we have the higher faculties of our minds to use and their use makes us all the more special. One of the higher faculties of a human mind is “Imagination“. It’s has been used and abused in a wrong manner by the least creative people alive. Imagination is truly the greatest tool humanity could ever have.
What is IMAGINATION??
It is ones ability to see, what is not present in front of the eyes. What a marvelous thing? And you know something, you and your mind has the power to convert the thing in your imagination into a product or a lifestyle. Sounds too good to be true right? Trust me it is.
Everything you see around yourself was someone’s imagination once upon a time. The table, chair, AC, camera, laptop, mobile phone and many more. Run your eyes around the room and you will see things which people created using Imagination. Every single thing. The person who invented the camera, saw it in his mind. He must have been mocked or judged for sharing the idea or the concept he was working on. But he knew that he could create such a thing and he had it’s picture in his mind, so he went on to create it.
Now you will question how these people converted those IMAGINARY things to real ones
Well, if you will keep imagining the same thing for a definite period of time, your mind will give you a million ways to transform it into reality. The power of turning thoughts into things is an art and it needs great amount of conscious effort. Visualizing the things with absolute involvement doesn’t come naturally to adults. Want to know why? Because their mind somehow already knows that this will not work. And this doubt becomes their obstacle.
Every successful person around this globe has converted the image in his mind into a reality, be it Warren Buffet, or Mark Zukerberg or Wright brothers, or Bill Gates or Arnold Schwarzenegger or anyone else you want to analyze. They have all used their imagination and their mind gave them ways to work upon to convert their imagination into reality.
Do you know that children are the greatest creative imaginators of this world?
Yes, they are because they don’t think about the guarantee with which the visualization will work. They just see what no one else can. I have a two year old daughter and she meets the elephant every day, the alligator came to dinner the other day, she even says hi to a tree and gives it a hug. She tells me that the cuckoo called out her name and is asking her to come and play. When she listens to a story she becomes one of the characters and her teddy becomes the other one. After the story she role plays it with her teddy, and the teddy’s got dialogues too. Isn’t this art marvelous?
A perfect example of how imagination works can be seen in a child. And it is the responsibility of a parent and the teachers to make sure that this higher faculty of mind, doesn’t fade with education. Have you seen parents telling their children about how a ghost stays in the store room and if they will not obey, the ghost will eat them? Or have you seen the situation where a child gets told that his preparation is not good enough for him to pass the exams, so he must prepare to do the household work from the coming month? I have heard many such imaginary scenarios which make sure that the child uses his imagination destructively. (ALSO READ: Your Guide To Counsel Your Child After Failure)
This higher faculty of the child’s mind is being put to use. The imagination is being put to use but for what? To instill fear.
It’s my humble request to all the parents and to the teachers to not use imagination as a weapon. If you can’t make the child use his super power creatively, don’t use it for destruction. Imagination is so powerful and so effective that doctors use it for treatment. If your child is imaginative, give it a boost. Pat his back and ask him to practice this art of seeing things which are not around. You can try the tips below to instill some seeds of imagination in his mind.
- Read books together and change the characters or the story line as per your child’s wishes.
- Storytelling is one of the most efficient ways to spark a child’s imagination. Don’t show them animated stories. Narrate the stories, so that their mind can build an image of it’s own.
- Have a session of ” I am the king of the world” every week wherein you allow your child to imagine a new world for himself and role play.
- Role play with him and be whatever character he wants you to be.
- If you are raising a teenager, catch his interest and sit down for creative visualizations with him.
- Ask your child what he wants from life and make them imagine a scenario where they own it all, be it a bike, or good grades, or a charming life partner.
- Encourage your child to learn, how to unleash the hidden powers of his mind(including imagination); because that is the key to his success. (You can learn more by clicking right here)
